I recently had the pleasure to be contacted by Ben Granfelt, a professional musician who lives in Helsinki. His daughter’s gaming laptop no longer had enough storage space for new games, and he wanted some advice on what would be the best way forward to increase the storage space for the laptop.
Running low on storage space is a common issue for many of us. Whether it’s the photos or videos we have taken, home movies we have made in apps like iMovie, or installing new software. It’s really very easy to run out of space.
When this happens, it’s wise ask ourselves a few questions:
- Can we create space by deleting old programs and data we don’t need?
- Can we move old pictures and video to external storage?
- What steps are needed to increase the internal storage capacity of the device?
In this case, the desired outcome was to increase the internal storage of laptop. Normallty this would mean backing up the user’s data onto an external device, replacing the internal hard disk with something larger, reinstalling the operating and applications, and then restoring the backed-up data. Not difficult to do if the steps are done methodically, but it can be time consuming.
The laptop in question was a high end gaming laptop from Lenovo which already has space inside the chasis for an extra hard drive. All Ben and myself had to do, was to decide what size HDD we were going to install.
The installation and configuration only took half an hour, which made it an affordable and simple upgrade.
